Nukakamma meaning “grassy water”, is the Khoisan name for Sundays River because of its verdant grassy banks. Nukakamma Canoe Trail is a much sought after two day flat-water trail along the Sundays River, which is situated some 40kms from Port Elizabeth (a mere half hour’s drive). The Nukakamma Canoe Trail is the only Green Flag Status Canoe Trail in South Africa.
The journey begins aboard our 4 metre double canoes with a 13km trip along the Sundays River from our premises to your overnight accommodation and a 13km canoe trip back the following day. We can accommodate a maximum of 12 people on a trail and the trails can be extended to 2 nights at a discounted rate. For safety reasons we do not allow less than 6 people on the trail at any one time.
The river is on average about 2m deep at high tide except at the mouth where it is much shallower. Depending on weather conditions, the journey can take anything from 3 to 5 hours, according to the tide and the wind.
The accommodation is an overnight two-roomed log cabin with two three-tiered wooden bunk-beds, fitted with foam rubber mattresses. It also has a covered barbecue area and is equipped with two picnic tables and some braai utensils.
Experience the thrill and excitement of the area with the bird life ranging to approximately 210 recorded species and watching out for Mullet fish actively jumping into or over the canoes. Keep your eyes peeled for Kudu, Bushbuck, Porcupine, Cape Otter, Vervet Monkeys and other wildlife in the bush across the river. Finally, finish your day off by enjoying a barbeque with the view of a spectacular sunset.

We were very excited to do this canoe trail. Unfortunately the day was a little bit windy and while it was fine on land, the wind was far more severe on the water. We did not know this or expect it. It would have been useful if we had been warned on the morning that the wind would be problematic and what should be done if the paddlers were blown backwards and could make no progress. In addition I would have liked to know what safety or support measures were in place. As it was 4 groups of paddlers set off and all but one boat capsized or was just swamped by small waves. This happened a few times meaning there was no progress. Luckily the paddlers were picked up by a motorboat and ultimately taken to the cabin. We appreciated that the group still got the night in the cabin and that was a lovely experience. However it would have been better if the canoes could have been taken there too so at least they could canoe back the next morning and still get the canoeing experience. As it was there was very little canoeing and some concerns about safety and support.

We had a wonderful time. Three generations together enjoying the fun, sun and beautiful Sundays River. The 4 hour paddle up on Saturday was easy and beautiful. We celebrated my grandsons 12th birthday at the cabin and enjoyed an afternoon of swimming, fishing and relaxing. The accommodation was comfortable and all the more exciting with the field mice and dungbeatles sharing with us. Sunday's home paddle proved too difficult with the gale force wind arriving earlier than expected. Abandoning canoes on the bank and a phone call to Candice, and the Ferry arrived to rescue us and delivered us and the canoes safely back to the start. All this just added to our family adventure and made it a weekend that made special memories that will be spoken of for years to come. Thanks to all of you for making this possible.

Good: - bedding - clean - brochures with details of the birds etc is brilliant and it helped identify the large variety of birds we came into close contact with. Needs attention: - after spending the whole day on the river i was disappointed that we couldn't swim when we got to the hut. Either the reeds need to be trimmed back or the jetty needs to be extended. - express instructions on how to use the shower should be provided. A little poster at the shower area would be great. Not everybody knows how to use that system. It was lovely, we will be back!

My son turned 21 and wanted an exciting adventure filled experience. The trip turned out more pleasurable than he bargained for. It was his first trip on a canoe and was a very exciting adventure for him and his friends. The Sunday's river is the fastest flowing river in South Africa but the experience was unforgettable. The help and assistance we received from the beginning of the trip to the end was exceptional. Everyone was helpful and very informative. The river was calm most of the time and nothing unforeseen happened. The accommodation was rustic and all our needs were met. Bedding was new, clean and the facilities was just what we needed after a 3 hour river trip. The barbeque area was well ventilated cupboards was stocked with everything you need for camping. Thanks once again. Just a small problem was for the 21 year olds, the OFF the grid experience. To me it was a blessing not to be online
