More about Elgin -Observation Car Seating

Ceres Rail Company offers a magnificent return trip to the Elgin Railway Market aboard our historic passenger train. Our train is usually hauled by a heritage steam locomotive and a diesel, but at times, due to the fire risk and other events beyond our control, the trip may be hauled by two diesel locomotives.

The journey begins at 07h45 from the platform at Harbour Bridge Hotel and Suites, Dockrail Road, Foreshore, Cape Town. Once aboard you will enjoy a 3-hour rail experience to Elgin, traveling through the beautiful Cape, up the majestic Sir Lowrys Pass, and then down into the Elgin Valley. We have a fully licensed cash bar on board as well as a dining car providing coffee and other snacks.

Our destination is the fabulous Art Deco & Art Nouveau inspired Elgin Railway Market where you will spend a few hours at your leisure. At the market, whilst enjoying the live music, you can wander through the many stalls offering delicious food, a wide selection of local wines, ciders and gin. Various bespoke craft stalls selling a wide range of goods including jewellery, leather goods, wire art, etc are also on site.

We depart from Elgin at 14h15, arriving back Cape Town at approximately 18h00.

We are so excited to have you on board!

A journey by train to remember... I live off euphoric moments in life and this experience by far, depicts exactly just that! The thrill of going back in time to an era I'd possibly be reincarnated from, pure bliss! From mingling with like minded enthusiasts from all walks of life over breathtaking views and wine tasting aboard, to arriving at our destination at the Elgin Railway Market, welcomed by the jovial indistinct chatter and live band tunes! A melting pot of local culture, the smell of curry spices lingering in the air to a vast choice of infused olives and artifacts to souvenir the day! The highlight being a flagship wine tasting of the Elgin regions finest! My birthday celebration closed off with a red ensemble to match the train and lots of bubbly to toast! It's been indeed a beautiful entry to a new chapter with many blessings to come! #elginrailwaymarket #elgincoolwines #ceresrailcompany

Excellent experience, excellent view!

What a treat! Having longed for another train ride for years this was quite special. We travelled as a family in the observation car which has large windows for a great view throughout the trip. Very comfortable chairs and a bench at the back. There were space even for our 3 year old to run around / sleep on the carpet. Friendly staff who are passionate about their train and future plans. A special thank you to Sharon and her son Alex who made a lot of effort to accommodate us and checked in to make sure all was well. The Elgin market was quite interesting with a wide variety of food and drinks as well as some shops. I can recommend a trip to anyone. We hope to be joining one of the other routes in the near future.

We have done the Elgin market run twice now, Jan 2020 and Dec 2022. It has been enjoyable. Any chance next summer of a different trip, maybe down to Simonstown or Strand?
