More about Local Walks

Stay at Otters’ Haunt on the banks of the Vaal or come as a day visitor. You can do several delightful walks, some very easy, others a bit more testing. Ask at Reception for a briefing and maps. We are dog friendly and your pets will love the local walks, suited to day trippers and guests staying over.

For Otters’ Haunt guests the local walks are FREE. Day visitors pay R90pp adults and 45pp for children, R50 per dog, to do any of the walks and also picnic on the property. The local walks are short and easy. For longer and more challenging routes go to DOME HIKES.

Local Walks include: RIVER WALK – over the bridges, under the natural bush trees, and along the shady island paths to excellent views of the Vaal rapids. 1km. Lovely spots to relax and take in the atmosphere and birdlife. FOREST WALK – up the Otters property and around the irrigation dam, leafy paths that branch off in all directions. Surely you expect to see Little Red Riding Hood in here somewhere! 500 metres.

FIELD CIRCUIT – over the tarred road onto our top fields, following a circular route on well marked paths. From here you obtain amazing views of the semi-circle of hills known as the Dome Bergland. This walk can be guided if you want to know more about the Vredefort Dome. 3km. You can drive to certain farms where we have access, for somewhat longer walks. These include: KOPJESKRAAL – Moderate to steep, very good views. 4X4 tracks and paths. Turn left out of Otters gate following Kopjeskraal Road to T junction Koedoeslaagte, left again onto gravel, 1 km to gate of Kopjeskraal Country Lodge on left. Buzz for entry OR take left hand sliding gate. Drive up to farm guest house and park. Trail goes along foot of koppies to the north and then up the hill to the lookout. 4-5 km. 1-2 hours. R75 entrance fee.

LANGUEDOC – Easy. Walk down to the Vaal river for a spectacular view. The entrance is just past Kopjeskraal Lodge, on the left. The track is the oldest crossing from Free State into Transvaal and passes Voortrekker graves. This is a private property and you must phone in advance. 2 km, 45 min. R50 entrance fee . RIETPOORT – Moderate. Mountain slope, good views. Well marked nature trail. Follow Kopjeskraal Road back to Parys, turn left onto R500 (to Fochville) and left again at fork to Potchefstroom. About 2 km later on the right is the gravel track to Rietpoort farm. KOPJESKRAAL – Moderate to steep, very good views. 4X4 tracks and paths. 3-4 km+. 1-2 hours. R75 entrance fee.
