The Vaal is Johannesburg’s whitewater river. Our base is just over an hour from the big city in the scenic and amazing Vredefort Dome World Heritage Site. This is the centre of the world’s oldest and largest known meteorite impact crater, and the Vaal is the only major river on Earth that flows through such a crater. The result is it has great rapids – nothing as big as the Zambezi but exciting all the same.
There are long lazy pools with much bird life, and very beautiful lunch spots and campsites. We usually include tubing on smaller rapids, just for fun. Our lead guides will tell you all about the Dome and show evidence of the blast. They are legally qualified and registered. No experience is required. We can carry the disabled – discuss with us. These trips are great for schools, team builds, parent-child bonding and holidays with friends.
The standard trip is halfday, 4 hours, either 08h30-12h30 or 13h00-17h00. You can also book for the Vredefort Dome Full Day rafting on the Vaal, with lunch. This is 6,5 hours through the most spectacular sections.
