What an experience! I loved every minute of the outing. From start to finish the service and personal attention our small group received was outstanding. We were warmly welcomed by Ms Gidi Caetano, offered a quick cup of coffee and off we went to Villiersdorp. En route Ms Caetano and the driver/guide (whose name I've shamefully forgotten, sorry) provided us with a lot of information on truffles, how they grow, how they are harvested, and how the dogs are trained to sniff them out, as well as information on wine, the region, geology, history and anything else we asked them about. On arrival at Altima we were again welcomed with open arms by Coenie and Hanene and we set off to the lookout point. It was windy, wet and pretty cold, but that made the white wines we were given to taste all the more crisp and fresh, and the reds all the more appreciated for their warming properties. Besides, these are perfect conditions for truffles to ripen in, so no complaints from me. By the time we were ready to truffle hunt, there was a break in the drizzle and I was thoroughly entertained by both Hanene and her dog (Dique, I think?) and the hands-on experience and thrill of actually finding truffles was so exciting. I marvelled at the incredible skill of both dog and handler. One could easily become addicted to the thrill of finding these nuggets of black gold in the soil, I would imagine. It was all over too soon, in my view, but once back at Anthonij Rupert, we were treated to an exquisite 4-course lunch, with truffles used in three of them (all but the dessert), but we also had truffle butter for our bread rolls, so happiness all round. The service was discreet and professional and I really had a lovely day out. The experience is highly recommended and I'd probably do it again next season. Thank you to everyone involved for great day.
